We finally made it. It finally didn’t rain on a day we wanted to go down to the land.
In fact, it was an absolutely gorgeous Spring day.
The sun!
The sky!
The birds!
Our goals: do the first mow of the year and scrub the cabin to get it ready for the first sleep.
I was fully expecting the grass to be knee-high and unbearable to cut. We had had a good amount of rain and sunshine. Heck, I had already mowed up in the city twice. That usually meant an hour south everything was growing even faster.
Luckily (obvious, now that I think about it) most of the land that we mow down at the farm isn’t really grass. It’s clover and wild strawberries and wildflowers. It doesn’t grow like grass until late Spring.
I was even more grateful to not need to mow because I was nursing an injured shoulder from a frisbee game the week before. Huzzah! No mowing!
Only cleaning!
We decided to take home all of the blankets and dishes from the cabin to give them all a real good wash. So while E was scrubbing, I was hauling things back up the hill load by load.
Y’all.
The cabin has never looked better.
Plus, we rearranged where the futon goes and it opened up a ton of space (the cabin is only 8×12 so when I say ‘a ton of space’ I mean you can walk two more steps).

As we finished up cleaning, we talked about our goals for the farm this year.
Remember one of my top three was to seal up the cabin more?
Well, “the cabin” just needs to be a project on its own.
This year we need to:
- seal it up to pleaseeeeee stop the wasps from finding their way in
- re-seal the outside siding
- paint the ceiling and put up trim to make it even more homier
Yes, we’ve added to the list.
But, we also know that if put more effort into the cabin, we’ll stay even more.
It’s a win-win situation.
After we finished, we took a little hike down Mayapple Way through the old forest.

I planted our holiday tree.

We checked on the ramp patch I started 4 years ago. It’s started to spread! In about three years we can begin harvesting!

We saw fields of spring beauties.

We saw spicebush beginning to bud (my favorite plant!).

We marveled at fiddlehead ferns.

We found cutleaf tooth wart.

I trudged around to see if I could find the patch of goldenseal again.
I did.
And they are blooming.

Nature is such a gift.
