Creative practices take practice. I always manage to forget this, how I need to approach my imaginative work the same I approach training for ultimate frisbee or planning out my work week.
The novel is stuck as the blog lies dormant as the journal goes untouched. It’s all connected, it all impacts the other.
This past week, I picked up my journal for the time in a month. And now I find myself typing out a blog post, with dreams of my novel hanging out in the back of my head. In fact, I spent all morning working on my novel.
This post won’t be profound past this.
Though it is about creative endeavors.
One of my big goals in learning how to sew was to be able to alter clothes I find at thrift stores to better fit me. The tricky thing about liking fun patterns in button-ups means they usually come from the men’s section. That means most of my shirt don’t fit right. They hit at the hip wrong, creating an undercurrent of gender panic.
Being able to alter clothes to fit MY body is transformational.
I finally finished my first alteration and it’s become my go-to shirt this summer. It’s loose, light, and hits at my waist exactly where I want it to. The sleeves are the perfect length, no rolling of the cuff necessary.
I’m so proud of it!
Before: way too long making for a weird bunching at the hips and sleeves that went down to my elbows

After: perfect length all around

The same day I finished this one, I altered a t-shirt to be the right length (hooray for learning how to work with knits).
I haven’t found time to work on other projects, but it’s at the height of garden and club season, so sewing is allowed to wait.
